The book investigates the Western natural philosophy introduced by Jesuits in late Ming and early Qing China from an interaction perspective. The first part deals with the translated works of Western natural philosophy, and in particular analyzes the adaption or accommodation in the process of translation. Focusing on theories of crystalline spheres, four elements, three regions, and sphericity of the Earth, the second part discusses how Chinese literati transformed Western natural philosophy and integrated its ideas with their Chinese counterparts to construct new views of nature. This study reveals the intercultural weaving of ideas in the transmission and transformation of Western natural philosophy at the time.
