Co-organized by the Centre for Sino-Christian Studies (CSCS) and the University Library of Hong Kong Baptist University
Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong, China 10-11 December 2026
The history of Christianity/Christianities in the Sinophone world has gained much attention in the academy. The resilience of the Roman Catholic, Protestant denominational, and homegrown independent churches, with multiple expressions of religious belonging, has been studied by historians, anthropologists, and religious scholars and continues to attract ample attention. The concept of “boundaries” and related terms such as “borders,” “borderlands,” “liminal,” and “frontiers” have shaped new lines of historical and anthropological scholarship on the diverse experiences of foreign missionaries and native Christians in China proper and among diasporas in Southeast Asia and beyond. Some of the notable topics include the indigenization of Catholic religious orders and Protestant denominationalism, the proliferation of Chinese diasporic churches in Hong Kong, Singapore, Penang, and beyond, the positioning of Chinese and ethnic churches in frontiers, the transmission and reception of Christian ideas and practices across linguistic, ethnic, gender, political and technological boundaries, the making of personal and collective religiosities in diverse temporal and spatial settings.
