Li Sher-shiueh. Saints, Demons, and Penance: A Preliminary Study of
Alfonso Vagnone's Chinese Translation of Legenda Aurea in Ming China,
in Logos and Pneuma 32(2010):199-223.

English Abstract:

This paper addresses the Jesuits' introduction of medieval European
literature into Ming China. One example I discuss is Alfonso Vagnone's
Tienzhu shengjiao shengren xingshi, which is Ming translation and
abridgement of the well-known Legenda Aurea, a 13-century collection
of hagiographies written by Jacobi A. Voragine, which includes lives
of almost two hundred prominent saints. By exploring such topic as
sainthood, monstrosity, and penance, I focus on the idea of sanctity
as expressed in Vagnoni's Chinese rendition of the work. The saints
whose biographies I deal with include St. Anthony, St. Augustine, and
St. Mary Magdalene. I argue that the translation of the Legenda Aurea
in the Ming is an epoch-making event in the history of Chinese
translation of European literature.

He Shanmeng. Xu Guangqi and the Religion of Three-in-one: A research
on Xu Guangqi's Early Life and the Change of His Belief, in Logos and
Pneuma 32(2010): 173-195.

Abstract:

Most researches on Xu Guangqi focus on his role of spreading
Catholicism in China as a Chinese catholic, and on the roles of
introducing western science and technology into China. These roles all
took place after Xu became an official in the court. Xu became a
bureaucrat when he was 43 years old. His first contact with
Catholicism was in his 36 when he met Lfizaro Catfino in Shaozhou.
Therefore, at least before Xu's 30, he had no connection with
Catholicism. He just lived as a normal Chinese Confucian. What had Xu
done in his early life? Xu's earlies experience has been omitted in
his work and researches on him. This article focuses on the early life
of Xu and the reason that help Xu to change his belief from Confucian
to Catholicism. According to a record in the works of the religion of
three-in-one(if it is valid), Xu has been a believer of that religion.
We can have a new understanding on Xu's life and his change of belief.

The core material of this article is one record in the biography of
Lin Zhao'en:

The same record  is from 《林子年谱》(1999)。
